Young Guns Shooting Team

HORSESHOE BEND — Across the country, youth groups and organizations ranging from the Boy Scouts of America to 4-H clubs are offering shooting sports programs for kids that teach youth marksmanship skills, firearm and range safety, teamwork and fundraising methods while increasing their involvement in shooting sports.
The Boise County Young Guns (BCYG) are part of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (STCP) that began more than a decade ago. The Boise County group was organized earlier this year.
  The club is led by head coach Jennifer Leach and assistant coach Judy Weber, both National Rifle Association (NRA) certified shotgun instructors.
Leach said that SCTP teaches firearms safety while developing positive life skills through shotgun sports.
  “Our Young Guns club provides young people with a positive experience in sport shooting and is designed to instill a set of personal values for fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline and personal commitment,” Leach said.
“These qualities will serve them well throughout their lives and will be instrumental in helping each athlete reach his or her potential.”
Young Guns’ current team members include David Doxey Jr., Skylar Rau, Foresst Renfro, and Quade Renfro. All are residents of Horseshoe Bend. The Young Guns, and other clubs across the state, are looking for more school-age boys and girls to join local teams.
“Trapshooting is a life-long sport where both boys and girls compete as equals,” Leach said.  “There is no limit to the amount of shooters on the Young Guns and applicants don’t need to be a resident of Boise County to join. College-age shooters are also eligible to participate,” she said.
The Young Guns competed in two tournaments this summer and have done very well.  While most of the events have been trapshooting, they have also competed in skeet and sporting clays.

Is your child lucky enough to have a WILD teacher? If so, that teacher has attended a Project WILD workshop somewhere in the state, or even the country, for that matter! Project WILD is a national program, which in Idaho is offered through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. At workshops, teachers learn ways to easily incorporate wildlife and ecological concepts into a subject they are already teaching. Wildlife is a tool that gets the kids excited about learning!
The goal of Project WILD is to assist learners of any age in the development of awareness, knowledge and skills towards responsible behavior and constructive action for wildlife and the environment. Educational activity guides provide information and projects on topics like these:

  • the appreciation of wildlife;
  • human values and wildlife;
  • wildlife and ecological systems;
  • wildlife conservation;
  • cultural and social interaction with wildlife;
  • wildlife issues and trends;
  • wildlife and responsible human actions

Each activity in the book includes a statement of the instructional objectives, a description of the instructional methods employed, background information for instructors and lists of any materials needed.

Visit the National Project WILD website to learn more about the history and background of this innovative program.

1,000 Mile Walkabout Through Idaho

In the spring and summer of 2012, Thomas Jay Oord walked more than 1,000 miles in Idaho. He trekked amazing and remote parts of the state and walked the Idaho Centennial Trail from the Nevada border to the Canadian border. As he walked, Oord took photos of the beautiful places in the state. He filmed segments of his journey with a variety of cameras, and he experimented with time-lapse photography. This video was produced by Roman Lyon using some of Dr. Oord's material. See his photos on his facebook page or at a slideshow presentation.
